To be quite honest, this post turn from taking notes, writing numerous passages that made no sense, to a final outright rant that has me questioning my usages of the internet and how me as an African American consumer will face the idealism of what the internet will have in store for me (and other POC) next.
Taking a different pace from our usual Netnarr readings, being able to listen to these issues that we a currently facing with the algorithm of the new middle man … I am quite scared. Reading about it is one thing, but actually hearing voice behind these findings gives the realness of the true underlining issues.
I would like to first start off my rant from the podcast by rfrenceing one of my fellow NetNarr scholars, Medea:

This comment and search engine result from googling or you-tubing Sicilians goes to show that Google Search Engine = Back up Brain … But is this a good thing? Are we falling victim to the easy accessibility of the one click. Google search is NOT like a library … advertising for clients and their content; The idea of racism and sexism if profitable. We are not google customers, these advertisers are!
Fun Fact: The first thing that pops in a google search is always on Ad of what you are looking for. WHY is that?
Money, Popular, technical skills..
Are animals more important than racism?
Turning a blind eye as “consumers” … I am guilty of this.
Canaries in the coal mind: This is just the beginning … what does our future or retrieving information and education in the search engine.
Google search is great to try to remember a song but not always great to gain knowledge, to know better, to appreciate the arts. Not relying on a search engine for vital information.
The human experience of education and how these search engine algorithms are effecting it.
Stuck on the face recognition
Using face recognition in a police search .. is that fair? Growing up, I would consider myself an ignorant bliss as to what is going on in the world around in me. Or in other words, I choose to ignore as my coping mechanism. But what technology developing everyday, we are being tracked down more and more. Am I the only one completely freaked out about this? I think that is why I must likely will never update my phone to face recognition… But then again, will my face be picked up by the computer system … there goes my brain ranting again.
One reply on “Brain Ranting on the Algorithms”
Right! That facial recognition thing is what really hit me hard. There are constitutionally based rules for searches and seizures, so are WE skipping the steps, and just mining people’s faces? I’m uncomfortable. And modeling our system after CHINA, folks? No. Just no. China, a communist country, watches everything their people are doing. You only see what they want you to see on the Internet (filtering). And you get potentially ousted from the government for even trying to dissent, erased, nobody will know you. This is dystopia that is disturbing. I agree. WARNIG- BIG ORANGE CODES EVERYWHERE
